The Fourth House

Angular (the IC) · natural sign Cancer · home, roots and family

The fourth house is the foundation of the chart, the ground a life is built on. Set at the very base of the horoscope — its cusp the Imum Coeli — it governs home and family, roots and ancestry, the private world behind the public one, and the deep sense of belonging that shapes a person long before they leave it.

What the fourth house governs

The fourth house governs home, family and origins — the dwelling itself, the family one is born into, the lineage and ancestry behind it, and the innermost private life that no outsider sees. It is the psychological bedrock of the chart: the conditioning of childhood, the felt sense of where one comes from and belongs.

Tradition assigns it further to one of the parents (astrologers differ on which), to the land and property held by a family, and to endings — the close of matters, the final years, the grave. As the point farthest from the visible sky, the fourth is what lies beneath: the last privacy, the root that outlives the branch.

Angular — the foundation of the chart

The fourth is an angular house, and its cusp, the Imum Coeli (Latin for the lowest point of the heavens), is the northern arm of the chart's meridian — directly opposite the Midheaven. Angular houses carry the greatest immediacy, and the fourth applies that force inward and downward, to the foundations rather than the façade.

Because it is angular, planets in the fourth are powerful even though their action is hidden from public view; they work at the root of things. The strength here is structural — it holds up everything above it. What is unsettled in the fourth tends to unsettle the whole chart quietly, from below.

Cancer and the Moon as archetype, not fact

The fourth house belongs by nature to Cancer and its ruler the Moon — the archetype of home, nurture, memory and the tie to mother and origin. This is why the house speaks in the Moon's language of shelter and belonging. But the natural pairing is an archetype, not a chart: the fourth is not simply Cancer in any real horoscope.

The sign genuinely on the fourth cusp is set by the birth time and place, and the Moon — or whichever planet rules that sign — falls wherever the chart puts it, describing the real texture of home and family. Since the Imum Coeli is fixed by the exact minute of birth, an inaccurate time moves the whole foundation. Only a full calculation reveals it.

Why the cusp depends on time and system

The Imum Coeli is one of the chart's two determining axes, computed directly from the birth moment and place — but not every house system uses it as the fourth cusp. Quadrant systems such as Placidus, Koch, Regiomontanus and Campanus set the fourth house to begin exactly at the IC; whole-sign and equal houses do not, placing the IC somewhere inside the fourth house rather than on its cusp.

Astrolabe computes nine systems — Placidus, Whole-sign, Equal, Koch, Regiomontanus, Campanus, Porphyry, Morinus and Alcabitius — so the foundation of the chart can be read as each tradition intends. All of them, without exception, require an accurate birth time to place it at all.

The fourth–tenth axis

The fourth is balanced by the tenth across the vertical meridian of the chart, and the two form its most fundamental axis. The fourth is private; the tenth is public. One is home, origin and the inner base; the other is career, reputation and the outer standing. One is the root, the other the fruit. A strongly fourth-house life, rich in inwardness and belonging, grows by honouring the tenth — the call to stand in the world and be seen — just as a tenth-house life must return to the fourth to be nourished.

Common questions about the Fourth House

Which parent does the fourth house represent?

Traditions differ. Some assign the fourth house to the father and the tenth to the mother; others reverse it, reading the fourth as the nurturing parent. What is agreed is that the fourth–tenth axis describes the two parents and the private-versus-public inheritance they represent. A full chart, rather than a rule of thumb, shows how each is placed.

Is the fourth house the same as the IC?

In quadrant house systems, yes — the Imum Coeli is the cusp of the fourth house. In whole-sign or equal houses the IC still exists as a calculated point but may fall inside the fourth house rather than exactly on its cusp. Either way the IC marks the private base of the chart, opposite the Midheaven.

Why does the fourth house depend on birth time?

Because its cusp, the Imum Coeli, is derived from the exact moment and place of birth, rotating through the whole zodiac in a day. Without an accurate time the base of the chart cannot be fixed, and the houses built around it shift with it.

The sign at the base of your chart — the fourth-house cusp and Imum Coeli — depends on your exact birth time and place; calculate your chart to find your foundation.
