Leo, the Lion

Fixed fire · ruled by the Sun · the fifth sign of the zodiac

Leo is the zodiac's act of radiance — the self no longer merely present but expressed, warmed and given shape. As the fixed sign of the fire triplicity, it holds a steady flame rather than a spark: the sustained will to create, to be seen, and to give oneself wholly to what one loves.

Fixed fire, and what that means

Each sign fuses an element with a modality, and Leo binds the most self-expressive element to the most enduring mode. Its element, fire, is the principle of will, warmth and creative self-assertion — the desire to shine outward. Its modality, fixed, holds the centre of a season, sustaining rather than beginning or dissolving; Leo occupies the steady heart of summer.

The result is a warmth that does not flicker. Where cardinal fire ignites and mutable fire wanders, fixed fire burns on — loyal, generous and constant in its enthusiasms. Leo's gift is wholehearted creative presence; its shadow is the same need for the light turned brittle, as pride, or a hunger for recognition that cannot be satisfied from outside.

The Sun, the ruler, and no exaltation

Leo is ruled by the Sun, and the two share a single meaning. The Sun is not a planet like the others but the centre around which the rest revolve — the principle of vitality, purpose and the irreducible self. In Leo that centrality becomes the whole disposition: the wish to live from one's own core and to be met as an individual. A strong, dignified Sun gives Leo its confidence and generosity; under strain, the same drive curdles into vanity or a fragile need for applause.

Leo holds no classical exaltation: no planet is traditionally honoured here above the rest. This is fitting for the Sun's own sign, which shares its light with no guest — a Leo placement is read through the state of the Sun in the chart, the very source of the sign's warmth.

Sun, Moon or Ascendant — the placement changes everything

Popular astrology equates Leo with a run of dates, yet the sign works differently according to where in the chart it stands. The Sun in Leo — the Sun in its own sign — describes an identity organised around creativity, dignity and the need to express something wholly one's own. The Moon in Leo describes an emotional nature that needs warmth, recognition and a stage, feeling most secure when appreciated. A Leo Ascendant lends a bright, dignified first impression and an expansive manner, and makes the Sun the ruler of the whole chart.

Which of these is true for a given person only a full calculation can tell. A Sun sign is a single data point; a natal chart shows where Leo actually falls, the house it governs, and how the Sun — its ruler — is placed and aspected.

Body and traditional correspondences

In the old scheme of melothesia, Leo governs the heart, the spine and the upper back — the organ that drives the circulation and the column that holds the body upright. That the sign of the self should rule the heart is one of the tradition's neater correspondences. Leo is the fifth link in the chain that runs from Aries at the head to Pisces at the feet.

Its traditional tissue salt is Magnesia Phosphorica, associated with muscular and nervous function; its Bach flower is Vervain, whose keynote is over-enthusiasm and the fervour that hardens into fanaticism. Stones long linked to Leo include aventurine, beryl, heliodor and bloodstone. Astrolabe surfaces these correspondences automatically for the Leo placements in a chart, offered for reflection rather than as medical advice.

The Leo–Aquarius axis

No sign stands without its opposite, and Leo is balanced by Aquarius across the zodiac. Leo is the individual; Aquarius is the collective. One creates from the personal centre and asks to be seen as itself; the other looks to the group, the ideal and the many, and measures worth by contribution rather than distinction. Leo warms the near circle; Aquarius serves the wider one. In a chart their houses face each other, and a strong Leo emphasis grows by drawing on the Aquarian pole — the ability to set the self aside for something shared.

Common questions about Leo

What are the exact dates for Leo?

The Sun is in tropical Leo from about 23 July to 22 August. The exact cusp dates shift by up to a day between years, because the tropical zodiac tracks the seasons rather than a fixed calendar. A birth near either edge should be confirmed with an actual chart calculation.

Which planet rules Leo, and is anything exalted there?

Leo is ruled by the Sun in both traditional and modern astrology, and it is the Sun's only sign. No planet is classically exalted in Leo, so the sign is read chiefly through the Sun's condition in the chart. The Sun acts as chart ruler for anyone with a Leo Ascendant.

Is a Leo Sun the same as being a Leo?

Not entirely. The Sun sign is one placement among several. A person with the Sun in Leo may have the Moon and Ascendant in other signs, which is why two Leos can seem so different in temperament. A full natal chart resolves this.
