Libra, the Scales

Cardinal air · ruled by Venus · the seventh sign of the zodiac

Libra is the zodiac's turn toward the other as equal — the point at which the self, fully formed, learns to weigh its will against another's. As the cardinal sign of the air triplicity, it initiates through relationship and judgement, seeking the balance from which fairness, partnership and beauty are made.

Cardinal air, and what that means

A sign's nature is set by the pairing of its element and its modality, and Libra unites the most relational element with the most initiating mode. Its element, air, is the principle of thought, exchange and connection — the reaching of one mind toward another. Its modality, cardinal, opens a season; Libra begins at the autumn equinox, when day and night stand equal, an image the sign takes as its own.

The result is an initiative exercised through others. Libra leads by relating — it proposes, negotiates, and sets things in proportion, moving first where a balance must be struck. Its gift is fairness, grace and the art of the just measure; its shadow is the same weighing turned chronic, as indecision, or a wish to please that mislays the self among other people's preferences.

Venus, the ruler, and Saturn's exaltation

Libra is ruled by Venus, and here the planet shows its airy face rather than the earthy one it wears in Taurus. In Libra, Venus governs relationship, harmony and proportion — the attraction between equals, the pleasure of symmetry, and the values by which a fair exchange is judged. A well-placed Venus gives Libra its charm, diplomacy and eye for beauty; under strain, the same sensitivity to others softens into appeasement or a dependence on approval.

Libra is also the sign of Saturn's exaltation. A planet in exaltation is honoured as a distinguished guest, and Saturn — the principle of structure, justice and restraint — is drawn out in Libra as fairness given weight and form. It is why the sign's love of harmony is not mere softness: behind the balance stands Saturn's sense of what is due and right.

Sun, Moon or Ascendant — the placement changes everything

Popular astrology reduces Libra to a birthday, yet the sign behaves differently by where in the chart it sits. The Sun in Libra describes an identity organised around relationship, fairness and the search for balance. The Moon in Libra describes an emotional nature that steadies through harmony and companionship and is unsettled by conflict. A Libra Ascendant gives a gracious, considered first impression and an accommodating manner, and makes Venus the ruler of the whole chart.

Which of these is true for a given birth only a full calculation can show. A Sun sign is one data point; a natal chart reveals where Libra actually falls, the house it governs, and how Venus — its ruler — is placed and aspected.

Body and traditional correspondences

In the tradition of melothesia, Libra governs the kidneys, the lumbar region and the skin — the paired organs that filter and balance the body's fluids, keeping its inner chemistry in equilibrium. That the sign of balance should rule the organs of balance is one of the scheme's fitting symmetries. Libra is the seventh link in the chain running from Aries at the head to Pisces at the feet, and it marks the descent into the lower half of the body.

Its traditional tissue salt is Natrum Phosphoricum, associated with the acid–alkaline balance; its Bach flower is Scleranthus, whose keynote is indecision and the vacillation between two options. Stones long linked to Libra include agate, diamond, beryl and cacholong. Astrolabe surfaces these correspondences automatically for the Libra placements in a chart, offered for reflection rather than as medical advice.

The Libra–Aries axis

No sign stands alone, and Libra is answered by Aries at the opposite point of the zodiac — the same axis Aries names from its own end. Libra is the other; Aries is the self. One relates, weighs and includes; the other asserts, decides and acts alone. Libra asks what is fair to all; Aries asks what it wants. In a chart their houses face each other, and a strong Libra emphasis grows by borrowing from the Aries pole — the nerve to choose for oneself and act without waiting for consensus.

Common questions about Libra

What are the exact dates for Libra?

The Sun is in tropical Libra from about 23 September to 22 October, beginning at the autumn equinox. The exact boundaries move by up to a day from year to year, because the tropical zodiac is anchored to the equinoxes rather than to the calendar. A cusp birth should be confirmed with a real calculation.

Which planet rules Libra, and what is exalted there?

Libra is ruled by Venus in both traditional and modern astrology; Venus also rules Taurus but expresses differently in each. Saturn is exalted in Libra, lending the sign's harmony a sense of justice and structure. Venus acts as chart ruler for anyone with a Libra Ascendant.

Is a Libra Sun the same as being a Libra?

Not entirely. A Sun sign is one placement among many. Someone with the Sun in Libra may have the Moon and Ascendant in quite different signs, which is why two people with the same Sun sign can seem so unalike. A full natal chart makes the difference clear.
