The Seventh House

Angular (the Descendant) · natural sign Libra · partnership and the other

The seventh house is the house of the other — the person met across from oneself. Its cusp is the Descendant, the western point where the chart turns from self to relationship, and it governs partnership in all its forms: marriage and committed union, close allies and counterparts, contracts, and even the declared open enemy.

What the seventh house governs

The seventh house governs one-to-one relationship: the marriage or committed partnership above all, but also the business partner, the close collaborator, the counsel and the client — anyone met as a distinct other and dealt with face to face. It is the house of the significant you, the person whose presence completes or contests the self.

Its reach includes contracts and agreements, the formal bonds that bind two parties, and — strikingly — the open enemy: the declared opponent, the rival in plain sight, the adversary across the table. Ally and enemy share this house because both are met openly, as equals and counterparts, unlike the hidden undoing of the twelfth.

Angular — the point where self turns to other

The seventh is an angular house, and its cusp, the Descendant, is the western arm of the horizon — the exact point where the ecliptic sets, directly opposite the Ascendant. As an angle it carries immediacy and weight: relationships in the seventh are not incidental but structural to a life.

Planets falling near the Descendant are powerful and outward-turned, shaping the kind of partner sought and the manner of relating. Because the seventh sits opposite the first, it is the part of the chart most visible to others and least visible to oneself — often experienced as something that arrives through another person rather than as one's own trait.

Libra and Venus as archetype, not fact

The seventh house belongs by nature to Libra and its ruler Venus — the archetype of balance, union and the art of relating, the weighing of self against other until the two are fair. This is why the house speaks in Venus's language of harmony and partnership. But the archetype is not any actual chart: the seventh is not simply Libra in a real horoscope.

The sign genuinely on the seventh cusp — the Descendant — depends on the birth time and place, and Venus, or whichever planet rules that sign, falls wherever the chart places it, describing whom a person is drawn to and how they partner. Since the Descendant is exactly opposite the Ascendant, it too moves a degree every four minutes. Only a full calculation reveals it.

Why the cusp depends on time and system

The Descendant, like the Ascendant it faces, is fixed directly by the birth moment and latitude, and most house systems — Placidus, Koch, Regiomontanus, Campanus and the rest — begin the seventh house exactly there. Whole-sign houses differ: they give the entire seventh sign from the Ascendant to the seventh house, so the Descendant may lie inside it rather than on its cusp, and a partner-planet can shift houses accordingly.

Astrolabe computes nine systems — Placidus, Whole-sign, Equal, Koch, Regiomontanus, Campanus, Porphyry, Morinus and Alcabitius — so the house of partnership can be read in whichever framework a tradition favours. Every one of them needs an accurate birth time to place the Descendant at all.

The seventh–first axis

The seventh is the partner of the first across the horizon — the original axis of self and other. The first is I, the self that acts; the seventh is you, the other who answers. The Ascendant and Descendant are two ends of one line, and each defines the other: the qualities a person will not own in themselves are often met, vividly, in the partner across the seventh. A strongly seventh-house life, oriented towards others, grows by reclaiming the first — the capacity to stand alone — while a first-house life is completed by the seventh.

Common questions about the Seventh House

Why does the seventh house rule both partners and open enemies?

Because both are met as equals, face to face and in the open. The seventh house is the house of the significant other, whoever stands directly opposite the self — and that counterpart may be an ally or an adversary. What unites marriage and the open enemy is the directness of the encounter, as distinct from the hidden opposition of the twelfth house.

Is the seventh house the same as the Descendant?

In quadrant house systems, yes — the Descendant is the cusp of the seventh house. In whole-sign or equal houses the Descendant remains a calculated point but may fall within the seventh house rather than exactly on its cusp. Either way it marks where the chart turns from self to other, opposite the Ascendant.

Which sign is on my seventh house?

It is the sign on your Descendant, opposite your Ascendant, and so depends on your exact birth time and place. Libra and Venus are the natural archetype of the seventh, not the reality of a given chart; only a calculation shows the true sign on the seventh cusp and where its ruler falls.

The sign on your seventh-house cusp — your Descendant — depends on the exact minute and place of your birth; calculate your full chart to see your house of partnership.
