Capricorn, the Sea-Goat

Cardinal earth · ruled by Saturn · the tenth sign of the zodiac

Capricorn is the zodiac's turn toward mastery — the patient labour of building something that will outlast the effort of building it. As the cardinal sign of the earth triplicity, it initiates through structure and time, setting itself against the slope of a long ascent and refusing to be hurried off it.

Cardinal earth, and what that means

A sign's character is fixed by the pairing of its element and its modality, and Capricorn joins the most solid element to the most initiating mode. Its element, earth, is the principle of matter, work and consequence — what endures and can be built upon. Its modality, cardinal, opens a season; Capricorn begins at the winter solstice, the year's turn back toward the light out of its longest night.

The result is an initiative measured in years rather than moments. Capricorn sets a goal at a distance and works toward it with discipline, patience and a clear sense of consequence, accepting limitation as the price of anything lasting. Its strength is endurance and responsibility; its shadow is the same seriousness hardened into coldness, pessimism, or an ambition that mistakes achievement for worth.

Saturn, the ruler, and Mars's exaltation

Capricorn is ruled by Saturn, and the two are closely matched. Saturn is the principle of structure, time and limit — the discipline that gives form to effort and the reckoning that follows it. In Capricorn that principle becomes the whole disposition: the acceptance of hard rules as the condition of real achievement. A strong Saturn gives the sign its integrity, patience and authority; under strain, the same gravity turns to fear, rigidity or a joyless sense of duty.

Capricorn is also the sign of Mars's exaltation. A planet in exaltation is honoured as an esteemed guest, and Mars — drive, courage, the will to act — is drawn out in Capricorn as disciplined ambition, force harnessed to a long purpose. It is why Capricorn's patience is not passive: Saturn sets the structure, and an exalted Mars supplies the sustained push up it.

Sun, Moon or Ascendant — the placement changes everything

Reduced to a birthday, Capricorn says little, for it reads differently by where in the chart it falls. The Sun in Capricorn describes an identity organised around achievement, responsibility and the long view. The Moon in Capricorn describes an emotional nature that is reserved and self-contained, steadying itself through competence and control rather than display. A Capricorn Ascendant gives a serious, composed first impression and a measured manner, and makes Saturn the ruler of the whole chart.

Only a full calculation shows which of these applies to a given birth. A Sun sign is one placement; a natal chart reveals where Capricorn actually falls, the house it governs, and how Saturn — its ruler — is placed and aspected.

Body and traditional correspondences

In the scheme of melothesia, Capricorn governs the knees, the bones and joints, and the skin — the skeletal framework that holds the body upright and the structures that give it definition and limit. That the sign of structure should rule the bones, Saturn's own tissue, is among the tradition's clearest correspondences. Capricorn is the tenth link in the chain that runs from Aries at the head to Pisces at the feet.

Its traditional tissue salt is Calcarea Phosphorica, associated with bone and its repair; its Bach flower is Mimulus, whose keynote is fear of known, everyday things — the ordinary, nameable worries. Stones long linked to Capricorn include agate, amethyst, turquoise and jet. Astrolabe surfaces these correspondences automatically for the Capricorn placements in a chart; they are offered for reflection, not as medical advice.

The Capricorn–Cancer axis

No sign is whole alone, and Capricorn is answered by Cancer across the zodiac — the same axis Cancer names from its own pole. Capricorn is the public world; Cancer is the private one. One builds the career, the structure and the standing in the world; the other builds the home and the inner life of feeling. Capricorn governs; Cancer nurtures. This is the solstitial axis, from the year's longest night to its longest day, and a strong Capricorn emphasis matures by borrowing from the Cancer pole — the warmth and belonging that give the hard-won structure something worth protecting.

Common questions about Capricorn

What are the exact dates for Capricorn?

The Sun is in tropical Capricorn from about 22 December to 19 January, beginning at the winter solstice. The exact boundaries move by up to a day from year to year, because the tropical zodiac is anchored to the solstices and equinoxes rather than to the calendar. A cusp birth should be confirmed with a real calculation.

Which planet rules Capricorn, and what is exalted there?

Capricorn is ruled by Saturn in both traditional and modern astrology; Saturn also rules Aquarius by the older scheme. Mars is exalted in Capricorn, lending the sign's discipline a driving force. Saturn acts as chart ruler for anyone with a Capricorn Ascendant.

Is a Capricorn Sun the same as being a Capricorn?

Not quite. A Sun sign is only one placement among many. You might have the Sun in Capricorn while your Moon and Ascendant lie in other signs, which is why two people who share a Sun sign can feel so different. A full natal chart resolves this.
