Virgo, the Maiden

Mutable earth · ruled by Mercury · the sixth sign of the zodiac

Virgo is the zodiac's turn toward refinement — the impulse to sort, correct and improve what the earlier signs have set in motion. As the mutable sign of the earth triplicity, it is practical intelligence at work: discriminating, useful, and quietly devoted to doing a thing properly.

Mutable earth, and what that means

Every sign arises from a pairing of element and modality, and Virgo joins the most practical element to the most adaptable mode. Its element, earth, is the principle of matter and usefulness — what can be worked, ordered and put to purpose. Its modality, mutable, belongs to a season's close, a time of adjustment and transition; mutable signs analyse and adapt rather than initiate or hold.

The result is a temperament of applied discernment. Virgo notices the flaw others miss, breaks a task into its parts, and takes pride in competence and craft. Its gift is precision in the service of something real; its shadow is the same acuity turned to worry or fault-finding — a standard so exacting that nothing, least of all the self, is ever quite allowed to be enough.

Mercury, ruler and exalted in its own sign

Virgo is ruled by Mercury, and here the planet of mind turns from Gemini's airy talk to earthy analysis — reasoning applied to the practical, the bodily and the useful. Uniquely among the signs, Virgo is also the place of Mercury's exaltation: it both rules and is exalted here. A planet rules where it acts most freely and is exalted where its best qualities are honoured, and Mercury enjoys both dignities in Virgo at once, making it the sign where careful thought is most at home.

This double dignity sharpens the whole disposition. A strong Mercury gives Virgo its clarity, method and skill; under strain, the same faculty overworks into anxiety, criticism or a mind that cannot rest from checking. However a Virgo placement behaves, it is read first through the condition of Mercury in the chart.

Sun, Moon or Ascendant — the placement changes everything

Popular astrology flattens Virgo into a birthday, but the sign reads differently by where in the chart it falls. The Sun in Virgo describes an identity organised around competence, usefulness and the wish to improve things. The Moon in Virgo describes an emotional nature that steadies itself through order and being of use, and that frets when things are left unresolved. A Virgo Ascendant gives a modest, observant first impression and a precise manner, and sets Mercury as ruler of the whole chart.

Only a full calculation shows which of these applies. A Sun sign is a single placement; a natal chart reveals where Virgo actually falls, the house it governs, and how Mercury — its ruler — is placed and aspected.

Body and traditional correspondences

Within melothesia, the mapping of the zodiac onto the body, Virgo governs the digestive system and the intestines — the assimilation of food, and by long tradition the fine, sometimes over-sensitive workings of the gut. It is the sixth link in the chain descending from Aries at the head to Pisces at the feet, and its concern with purity and function is written into the anatomy it rules.

Its traditional tissue salt is Kali Sulphuricum; its Bach flower is Centaury, whose keynote is a weak will and the inability to say no — the servant who cannot refuse. Stones long linked to Virgo include agate, turquoise, garnet and emerald. Astrolabe surfaces these correspondences automatically for the Virgo placements in a chart; they are offered for reflection, not as medical advice.

The Virgo–Pisces axis

No sign is whole alone, and Virgo is answered by Pisces across the zodiac. Virgo analyses; Pisces dissolves. One divides experience into parts to understand and perfect it; the other lets the parts blur back into the whole. Virgo attends to the detail and the practical duty; Pisces to the boundless and the transcendent. In a chart their houses sit opposite, and a strong Virgo emphasis usually grows by borrowing from the Piscean pole — the grace to accept what cannot be corrected, and to let the imperfect be.

Common questions about Virgo

What are the exact dates for Virgo?

The Sun is in tropical Virgo from about 23 August to 22 September. The exact cusp dates move by up to a day from year to year, because the tropical zodiac follows the seasons rather than a fixed calendar. A birth near either boundary should be verified with a real calculation.

Which planet rules Virgo, and what is exalted there?

Virgo is ruled by Mercury in both traditional and modern astrology, and unusually Mercury is also exalted in Virgo — the sign carries both dignities of the same planet. Mercury therefore acts as chart ruler for anyone with a Virgo Ascendant.

Is a Virgo Sun the same as being a Virgo?

Not quite. The Sun sign is only one placement among many. You might have the Sun in Virgo while your Moon and Ascendant lie in other signs, which is why two people who share a Sun sign can feel so unlike. A full natal chart resolves this.
